SCRIPTURE READING: Daniel 1:8 – 15

Ama left for the University having in mind that she represented her loving father wherever she was. And so, she wanted to make her dad proud by finishing with a first class. In her final year, what bothered her most was the proposal by her lecturer to sleep with her in order to get the high mark she needed to achieve her dream. She had to make a decision which most of us face in life. Should she give in to him?
In our reading today, we see Daniel and his other three friends who were faced with a similar situation. All four of them were youths, and out of their native land to be slaves in the land of Babylon; where no mom or dad or church leader was present to check on them. The King instructed they should be taught the Babylonian language, and their names and diets changed. Realizing this is a strategy to gradually take their minds off home and off their worship, they took a stand not to be enticed by the King’s delicacies and so God gave them favour and goodwill in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs.

KEY VERSE:
“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, or with the wine which he drank.” – Daniel 1:8 (NIV)

LESSON/ LIFE APPLICATION:
Many of us find ourselves in the shoes of Ama and these Hebrew boys. And in many cases, when it looks like we don’t want to give in to those situations, we look very odd. But beloved, if we can first take that bold step of standing for God wherever we find ourselves, the God we are standing for will surely give us favour before men. And the very thing that made us odd looking, will be the one-step opportunity, rather to bring us more success.

PRAYER:
Lord, let me not conform to the world’s pattern but help me stand out for you and you alone.

MEMORY VERSE FOR THE WEEK:
“And God gave Daniel favour and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs.” – Daniel 1:9 (ESV)
